Solo travel in Stockholm Sweden
Best Things to do in Stockholm While Travelling Solo – Hello fellow travelers! I have decided to start with the topic of solo travel. I choose this topic because I think it’s still something that a lot of people are hesitant to try. I still get a lot of ‘are you crazy’ looks or concerned and confused ‘your going alone!?’ look when I tell people I will be traveling solo.
Traveling alone is one of those things that’s scary the first time you do it but, once you try it, once you realize ‘wow I can do this!’ it’s a great feeling of empowerment and accomplishment. If you’re worried about your first solo vacation start with something small, a day trip or a weekend trip. These shorter trips will give you confidence traveling alone and you will become more comfortable and confident traveling.
Best Things to do in Stockholm
Things to do in Stockholm -There are lots of reasons to travel alone, lots of articles have already been published on this topic. For me, the biggest reason to travel alone is that I would rather travel alone than not travel at all. Better to experience a great trip as a solo traveler than to completely miss out on a great experience. If you travel alone it does not mean that you are a loner. Or that you have no friends.
Maybe you think you can’t do it but you would be surprised by what you can accomplish! It might be something you actually like, you might even prefer it to travel with others. But you’ll never know unless you try. As long as you are prepared, organized, and safe there is no reason to worry about traveling alone. You just need to get over the fear, worry, or whatever is stopping you and go! I know it can be easier said than done but I did it and so can you.
The first time I decided to travel alone was when I decided to go to Sweden. I had plans to visit friends I met on exchange in Gothenburg but I also wanted to go to Stockholm. I didn’t know anyone living there and I didn’t have anyone to go with.
I was doing my masters in Vienna at the time, and we had 2 months off in the winter so my friends had all gone home for the break – and visiting Sweden in January is not an easy sell. So I had a decision to make. Either I would go alone or I wouldn’t go at all. So I decided to just go for it and I booked one bed in a shared dorm at a hostel for 4 nights.

My biggest fear was that I would get lost. I am one of those people who have no sense of direction and I always rely on the person I’m traveling with to navigate. When I got my driver’s license I had been living in the same city for 10 years and I still got lost all the time – that’s how bad at directions I am. I had this picture in my head of me wandering around Sweden totally lost in a snowstorm. But I pushed my worries aside and I went.
I made sure I was prepared, I printed off directions to the hostel I had booked and printed off maps from google maps with the route I had to take from the train station. My second biggest fear was that I would be alone. I imagined myself walking around, lost, of course, talking to myself like a crazy person because I had no one else to talk to.

Best Things to do in Stockholm While Travelling Solo In 2021 – Despite this I did it. And I didn’t get lost. And I wasn’t lonely. When I made it to the hostel, even though it was only a 15 min walk from the train station I felt so proud of myself.
It’s something I would not have accomplished if I had been traveling with someone else because I would have just relied on them to find the hostel. By traveling alone I had to do something I was uncomfortable with but I did it and it felt so great afterward! I also wasn’t lonely because I met a girl, who was also traveling alone, in the hostel I was staying at. Would I have met her if I was traveling with others? Probably not.
I would have had no incentive to talk to, or spend time with, a stranger. But because we were both alone we started talking and did some sightseeing together. Little did I know at the time that two years later I would move to Melbourne Australia, the city where only a week earlier the solo traveler I met in Stockholm also moved to. Now I have a good friend in Melbourne that I never would have had if I didn’t push myself to travel alone for the first time.
