Festivals in Vinh Long province mekong delta vietnam

Chol Chnam Thmay Festival

It is the New Year festival- the biggest festival of the Southern Khmer
people- which is similar to the Lunar year of the Viet people, and it held on the 12th, 13th, 14th, and 15th of the 4th lunar month at the pagodas and local homes. The festival’s meaning is to see off the hot sunny season and to enter the rainy period which is the time to make preparations for the ten-month long rice crop. People hold a “Seeing off the Old Deity Teveda” (the caring Deity) ceremony to welcome the new Teveda. On this occasion, apart from the worshipping ceremony,
people also congratulate one another. In the evening they set off fireworks, and attend games such as kite flying and fire dancing. The boys and the girls perform the Roam Vong dance, and sing Du Ke.

Don Ta festival(the wordhipping ceremony to the grandparents):

The “Don Ta” festival is held from 1st to 15th of the tenth lunar month in the area where Southern Khmer live. On these days, people bring “tet cakes” (glutinous rice cake filled with green bean paste and fat pork), and fruit, flowers and rice to the pagoda. After that they have feast at home.

  1. The bridge looks very fancy and impressive. It would be great to have a local tour guide to show around. Introduce the traditional and modern Vietnam.
