Ky Yen ceremony festival
Ky yen ceremony is a popular festival in Mekong Delta, and is an essential spiritual cultural activity for the local people. It is held annually in all communal houses in the south on the 15th,16th and 17th of the lunar calendar although the exact time depends on the area in which it is held. In each village in the south, there is a communal house dedicated to the village Deity. The Deity can be a person credited with great services to thr region, or someone who was bestowed up on the village by royal decree by the king, or a heroic legendary character. In the remote villages, where there is no a communal house, people must travel a long way to nearby villages to worship. The worshipping ceremony begins with the ceremony of requesting the Deity to arrive on the day of the fullmoon. It continues
with a staged processio for a throne. The offerings are roasted pig, a tray of steamed violet sticky rice, and spotlessly white “hoi” cake.
Following the procession, there are lion-dancing groups, and the drums resound boisterously with the festival music all night long .After worshipping, visitors go to enjoy a feast, and then go to see “hat boi”(classical drama performance). The classical drama performances take place from noon to night, from evening to midnight, and after the midnight meal, the performers continue. There are always many people watching from the stands. After three days of festivities, prayers to the deity, and the sound of drums and music, villagers go back to work and look forward to the next year’s festival.
