Ben Thanh Market
At the junction of Ham Nghi, Le Loi and Tran Hung Dao boulevards, in the center town, is the busy Ben Thanh Market. The market covers over 118,400 square feet and was opened in 1914. Here is an amzing collection of produce, meat, foods, cameras, fans, blue jeans, and leather bags, all imported from around the world. The smell of spices and dried seafood assails the nostrils, and the color of the many varieties of fresh fruits and vegetables provides a veritable feast for the eyes. At the back of the market, small food stalls serve a wide variety of local dishes.
Ho Chi Minh City Hall
If Reunification Hall is a symbol of the former South Vietnam regime, then City Hall, at the top of Nguyen Hue street, is the symbol of the French colonial era. Decorated by Ruffier, it was finished in 1908 after almost sixteen years of ferment over its style and situation. Its ornate facade and equally ornate interior, complete with crystal chandeliers and wall-size murals, is now the headquarters of the Ho Chi Minh City People’s Committee.
